With Constable Crabtree behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit at the start of this ninth series of the detective drama set in 19th-century Canada, the bulk of the episode is taken up with trying to free him and re-establish the status quo.
Now, with Murdoch Mysteries not exactly the most high-octane show on TV, this mainly involves either staring hard at sepia photographs or studying mould samples through a microscope (although there is a brief rooftop chase in which Murdoch’s hat miraculously stays on his head). But 115 episodes in, they’re not going to mess with a successful formula. And there’s a bittersweet pay-off to the case that makes it worth sticking around.
