Review

DCI John Luther (Idris Elba) has taken a grief-stricken leave of absence and is holed up in a clifftop cottage. It is, as the cop played by new cast member Darren Boyd observes, “pretty close to the edge”. That’s the sort of knowingly ridiculous line Neil Cross’s lurid murder drama thrives on.

Boyd and his sidekick (Rose Leslie) bring shocking news about Luther’s favourite psychopath Alice, which pushes him even closer to the edge (the psychological one, not the cliff) and into a fantastically reckless showdown with some north London gangsters.

The main story in this fresh two-parter, however, sees the new sleuths faced with a serial killer so horrifying, they blanch and can no longer think straight. The show is all about good people staring into the abyss, and these two are not cut out for it: there’s only one man who can help…

Summary

Part one of two. On a leave of absence from the police force, DCI John Luther is laying low in a rundown cottage. However, a visit from colleagues at the Met brings a piece of news that draws him back to London in search of the truth. Meanwhile, a cannibal serial killer has struck the city, and Luther is soon racing against the clock to stop them before they strike again. Drama, starring Idris Elba and Warren Brown.
