Review

After taking his final curtain call after 17 years as Principal Guest Artist for the Royal Ballet, Cuban star Carlos Acosta is now concentrating on forming his own dance company in Havana, as well as rebuilding the city’s ballet school (with help from Norman Foster).

While Acosta thinks the thawing of US-Cuba relations is a positive thing, he wants his company to be rooted in “our traditions, our rhythms, our dance, the undulations, the music – but more modern, more relevant to now”. Alan Yentob follows the dance superstar through an eventful few months.

Summary

Alan Yentob presents a profile of Cuban ballet superstar Carlos Acosta as he embarks on a new production of Carmen for the Royal Ballet and plans to create his own dance company and foundation in his homeland. Transforming a derelict architectural treasure for his project, he is aiming to finish a project first begun by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara over 50 years ago.
