Review

The antiques market is currently so volatile it’s increasingly difficult for the amateur to guess a valuation accurately. Even so, at the Roadshow in Bolsover it’s surprising to hear that several treasures haven’t increased in value at all since they were bought. Even worse, one painting is worth less because it’s revealed to be a recent Chinese knock-off – not that the owner seems to mind.

However, sometimes the excited reaction of the experts far exceeds the item’s valuation. Frances Christie is childishly gleeful when she’s shown two original illustrations for a Roald Dahl book, while John Foster is thrilled to see Barry Sheene’s racing leathers – complete with scuffs from his motorbike accidents.

Summary

Fiona Bruce presents the show from Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire. Finds on display include original illustrations for Roald Dahl's book Fantastic Mr Fox, a set of motorcyclist Barry Sheene's racing leathers, a collection of Star Wars toys, a mysterious metal rod that proves to be far more valuable than it appears and a miniature house used for training plumbers. A visitor to the show tries to find a glass figure for her mother, to replace one that exploded.
