Review

Doing a makeover on a house for a deserving family is one thing – and DIY SOS has been done many such over the years – but a whole neighbourhood? For a whole community? That takes a whole new level of effort.

Nick Knowles and his team of merry tradespeople – not to mention innumerable volunteers – are in Newton Heath, north Manchester, where they’ve taken over a group of run-down houses; their job is to convert the empty properties for the benefit of homeless ex-service personnel. It’s a bold project, and one that Princes William and Harry were keen to get involved with, but it’s a hugely ambitious one, too. Can they possibly get everything done in a couple of weeks?

Summary

Nick Knowles and the team take on their most ambitious project to date and transform a whole street of run-down empty properties in Manchester into homes for veterans. They are joined by the local community, as well as Prince William and Prince Harry, who volunteer their assistance on site. In the first edition of the two-part special, the team builds houses for two former soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan and are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. However, with the number of volunteers lacking and the buildings proving to be trickier than expected, the build is becoming the toughest yet.
