Review

And so it’s time to say farewell. After 12 years, more than 100 cold cases solved and almost as many changes of personnel, New Tricks is finally bowing out.

But first Ucos is looking into the murder of an ideological mental-health activist on New Year’s Eve 1999. His personal journal has suddenly surfaced revealing the final cryptic entry: “They want to silence me.” However, the investigations are cut short when an official inquiry into the Henway case is announced, and Ted, Steve and Danny are suspended from duty. Of course, we all know they won’t give in that easily. “This bunch of mavericks are prepared to go down kicking and screaming,” DCI Sasha Miller mutters before giving a nice roll call of all the characters that have gone before.

RT said of the first series: “Good writing... though the gentle character comedy generally works better than the crime-busting and it never exactly races along.” But it’s certainly been a marathon run.

Summary

The team investigates the murder of a political activist 15 years earlier but, just as it is getting somewhere, Ted orders the investigation to be halted and Ucos is threatened with closure following its perceived mishandling of the Hanway case. However, the team refuses to give up, and finds evidence of a cover-up involving top officials and a multi-national drugs company. Guest starring Meera Syal and Lorraine Ashbourne.
