Review

Movie moguls prattle on endlessly about star quality, but Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff really did have it in bucketloads. For 20 years from 1948, her blue eyes, crisp blonde hairdos and 1,000-watt smile lit up the big screen, until her clean-cut image fell out of fashion with late-60s’ mores. But her mumsy persona belied a prodigious talent, both as a singer and comedy actress.

Critics and clips from the likes of Calamity Jane and Move Over, Darling big up Day’s golden voice and deft comic timing, though it’s a shame there are no interviews with Day herself, now 91. But the profile is proof that, though she may have starred opposite Cagney, Sinatra, Hudson and Grant, Day was second to no one.

Summary
