Review

Clarke's likeable series is back. You have to love the way he celebrates ambitiously oddball designs. Not grand designs but petite ones, the sheds and cabins and camper vans that bear witness to people indulging their (often slightly eccentric) dreams.

Typical this week is Norfolk sculptor Peter, who is building a cartoon cabin-on-wheels in his cliff-top garden – with a retractable roof because “everyone should sleep under the stars at least once a year”. But Peter doesn’t believe in planning on paper: he intends to improvise the whole thing from reclaimed materials. Elsewhere, Clarke and collaborator Will Hardy hatch a scheme to reinvent the great British beach hut – so it floats.

Summary

The architect meets a father and son building an ambitious clifftop retreat and a young architect embarking on his first commission - a garden pavilion for his grandmother. Master craftsman Will Hardie sets out to transform the humble beach hut into the most unlikely of holiday getaways, and in Germany, George visits a modern house in a medieval town.
