Review

Remember all those beaming faces as the eight celebrities who’d just been told they’d got through to the semi-finals toasted their success with champagne? They’re not smiling quite so broadly now in the mass catering challenge as they prepare lunch from ingredients that would have been available in the Victorian era, using equipment they’ve never worked with before.

Back in the MC kitchen each bench has the ingredients and recipe to make a different British classic dish. The celebs must pick one at random without knowing whether they’ll have to make Cumberland rum nicky or a Lancashire courting cake (no, I haven’t a clue, either). Expect horrified looks.

In the next episode the remaining five celebrities must prepare a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, before tackling the pudding invention test (and as we know from the heats, some of the amateurs aren’t that good with dessert – we’re looking at you, Mica Paris).

Summary

After four weeks of intense competition, the best eight cooks have made it through to the semi-finals. Their first challenge sees them going back in time as they cater for 70 volunteers at the Blists Hill Victorian Town, an open-air museum in Shropshire. Split into two teams and working on equipment they have never used before, they have to create dishes from ingredients that would have been available in Victorian times. Back in the studio, they each cook a British classic, before John Torode and Gregg Wallace decide which hopefuls will be hanging up their aprons.
