Review

Peter Alliss, who died last year at the age of 89, was television’s voice of golf for the best part of 40 years. Several generations of fans grew up only knowing major tournaments as events soundtracked by his easy tones and quick brain, bringing the assurance of a seasoned raconteur to both the drama and the frequent absurdity of elite-level golf.

BBC4 pays tribute tonight with two programmes. At 9pm there’s An Evening with Peter Alliss, a celebration first broadcast on BBC2 in 2015 and featuring contributions from Gary Lineker, Bruce Forsyth and Hazel Irvine, as well as golfers Tom Watson, Darren Clarke and Gary Player. Then at 10pm there’s a 1981 episode of the golf/chat show Around with Alliss, where the interviewee is one of the few men who could match Alliss when it came to smooth, subtly mischievous repartee: Terry Wogan.

Summary

A celebration of the golf commentator and broadcaster's life and career, featuring anecdotes from his wife Jackie, golfers Tom Watson, Darren Clarke and Gary Player, and celebrities including Gary Lineker, Terry Wogan, Chris Evans, Bruce Forsyth, Jimmy Tarbuck, Hazel Irvine and Steve Rider. Plus, clips from some of his popular programmes, including Pro-Celebrity Golf, A Round with Alliss and A Golfer's Travels. Narrated by Sue Johnston.
