Review

….or Alexander (Armstrong) in the Underworld, as the genial Pointless host dons a hard hat and is lowered into the city’s dark spaces.

Rome is Armstrong’s favourite city, so he’s engaged and interested as personable historian Dr Michael Scott gives him a series of mini-lectures. The pair wander the labyrinth of pens and shafts beneath the Colosseum, appalled at the statistics – half a million people and a million animals were slaughtered for sport – before they drop into one of Rome’s many manholes to discover what lies beneath.

Of course, the question of where all of ancient Rome’s human waste eventually ended up has to be addressed, and after being instructed on no account to touch his face, Armstrong descends into the sewers.

Summary

Alexander Armstrong is joined by Dr Michael Scott to explore the underground treasures that made Rome the powerhouse of the ancient world. Using 3D scanning technology, he uncovers the lost subterranean world of the Colosseum, as well as the aqueducts and sewers that supplied and cleansed it, and helped run civilisation's first metropolis and its empire.
