Review

I’m not sure Phil and Kirstie chose the right title for their new property show. In Britain, the idea of a property being “listed” calls to mind Georgian rectories where the cornicing is a historic asset. But in this feisty, transatlantic format the title means: will a given couple renovate their house (as Kirstie advises) or buy a new one (Phil’s idea.)

Their first willing guinea pigs are Dawn and Paul, who have five children between them and a rambling, eccentrically laid out house in Huddersfield worth £460,000. Dawn wants to move; Paul reckons with Kirstie’s creative help they can make their quirky home everything they need.

Combining a property search with a renovation show is clever and the contest element between the presenters adds spice. Will these two ever stop goading each other like competitive siblings? Probably not.

Summary

Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer go head to head as they meet fed-up families whose homes no longer fit their requirements. After listening to their issues, Phil tries to persuade the owners to sell and upgrade on the property market, while Kirstie argues that investing, either by extending or redesigning, is the wiser move. In the first programme, Paul and Dawn, their three children, and his twin 17-year-old daughters from a previous relationship, find their current home isn't working for them any longer. While Kirstie suggests a complete overhaul, Phil is doing what he does best and finds a selection of alternative properties.
