The Madness of Hercules

Series 2 - Episode 8 The Madness of Hercules

Review

After the previous episode's whirlwind catch-up, things look grim indeed for our heroes of legend. Jason faces execution for killing the Oracle (he didn’t, of course); Hercules does his best to comfort Medusa (no longer in the throes of a bad hair day but with a heavy burden); and genius Pythagoras doesn’t know what to do to help his friends. The days of ribbing and banter seem very far away.

It’s an intense instalment, strongly written by Richard McBrien, and where it lacks the humour of series one, the episode hits its emotional cues – and concisely explains why Melas the High Priest (played by the wonderfully named Ken Bones) was so quick to betray.

Summary

Jason has been sentenced to death for his murderous act, and with the irrepressible might of the High Priests bearing down upon him, it appears there is little anyone can do to save him - even Ariadne seems powerless to secure his release. As Pasiphae tightens her grip on the city, the future looks bleak - until Hercules comes up with a plan involving Medusa that will require him to make a huge personal sacrifice. Mark Addy, Jack Donnelly and Sarah Parish star in the fantasy adventure.
