Changing Tides

Series 5 - Episode 1 Changing Tides

The perpetually solitary detective Vera Stanhope arrives home to her shabby, lonely house in the middle of nowhere, after the funeral of her namesake, Aunty Vera. In a typically wry aside, Vera tells her new sidekick: “Seeing your name in giant chrysanthemums is a bit depressing.”

In an episode first shown in 2015, Vera (Brenda Blethyn) strides on to a caravan park where a body’s been found in a burnt-out chalet. Her new sergeant Aiden Healy (his predecessor Joe Ashworth has gone up in the world) is a cocky know-it-all who doesn’t call Vera ma’am (which will probably rankle more with the audience than it does with Vera). Of course, she quickly cuts him down to size - after a few tumbleweed moments in the squad room.

Crime drama starring Brenda Blethyn. The detective investigates a fire that rips through a holiday park on the Northumberland coast, destroying three cabins. A young woman's body is discovered and the resort's owner, Jim Viner, fears the victim is his sister Deena when he returns from a weekend away with his daughter Clare. With Jim's suspicions confirmed, a police report then reveals Clare's boyfriend Ryan and his friends had been partying near the scene hours before the blaze started, but where are they now, and where is Deena's best friend Sally? Co-starring Kenny Doughty, Cush Jumbo and Jon Morrison.
