Review

The series finale doesn’t have a particularly unusual case to wave us off: in the cells under the courthouse, a defendant in a murder trial is shot by an assailant who evades witnesses and passes through locked gates. It’s a nice, neat tale with clues hidden in plain sight. As usual, you should watch and listen very closely in the opening moments before the murder takes place…

The real drama is, as usual, within the police team. JP and Dwayne’s relationship deteriorates further, as the younger man faces the common dilemma of whether to drop his incompetent colleague in it. Most significantly, James Fox arrives as Humphrey’s snooty dad, who thinks sleuthing on the sand is a waste of time. He’s sharp-suited, sharp-tongued and entirely dismissive of his son’s chosen path, which could be heart-wrenching in a different show.

But here we don’t want the warm idyll to be disturbed for too long, so a familiar son-seeks-approval story plays out gently, with both Fox and Kris Marshall taking it easy in the sunshine.

Summary

The team investigates the shooting of a murder suspect, and there is no shortage of potential culprits, with his angry wife and vengeful brother high on the list. There's just one little puzzle to solve before the cops can even think about whodunit - at the time of the killing, the victim was in police custody, behind three locked doors guarded by Dwayne and JP. So how did the shooter manage to slip through undetected? As if that wasn't enough for Humphrey to worry about, he also has an unexpected visit from his father (guest star James Fox), with whom he doesn't exactly see eye to eye.
