Review

Now and then on our two comedians’ travels we get a whiff of authentic strangeness.

When they visit a shrine to a Mayan deity called Maximón in Guatemala, they partake in one of those hokey ancient rituals that have been embellished to fleece tourists; but even so, a god who considers prayers over a cigarette and a tot of rum is worth paying $20 to. And the penis-shaped witchcraft candle Ed buys in San Salvador is the kind of souvenir you don’t get just anywhere.

Sometimes you wonder if “adventure” isn’t overstating the lads’ sedate journey – especially compared to the 1940s expedition they’re retracing – but this is a delightfully easy watch.

Summary

Ed Byrne and Dara O Briain head into Guatemala as they continue their road trip, visiting Lake Atitlan to pay their respects to Mayan deity Maximon, exploring the ancient colonial city of Antigua and scaling the nearby active volcano Pacaya. In El Salvador, they learn first-hand about the gangs that make it one of the most violent countries in Central America, before they cross the border into Nicaragua, where they meet two Sandinista veterans who helped overthrow the Somoza regime in the 1970s.
