Review

Everything is supersized in Alaska. America’s biggest state keeps throwing up big numbers in this instalment: 300 million salmon swim up its rivers to spawn (or try to – the grizzly bears have other ideas). We see a herd of 40,000 caribou, tormented by the emergence of trillions of mosquitos: each beast can lose half a pint of blood a day to the insects, apparently.

But most arresting of all is the sight of one man’s prize pumpkin. The 24-hour sunlight in summer means you can grow vegetables on a whole different scale there: his weighs over a ton and requires him to saw off his greenhouse roof to have it hoisted out by crane.

Summary

The land is bathed in 24-hour sunlight during the short Alaskan summer, luring hummingbirds up from Mexico, exposing deserts in the Arctic and relying on parachuting firefighters to tackle forest fires in its vast wilderness. Grizzly bears fatten up on a sudden wealth of salmon, a caribou calf joins a vast herd on its great migration and a huge male moose finds unlikely ways to impress a female. Among the human population, a dedicated grower of giant vegetables takes his half-ton pumpkin to the Alaska State Fair.
