A Cook Abroad: Dave Myers' Egypt

Series 1

Making falafel that don’t disintegrate into a pan of Bombay mix is as good a reason as any for visiting Egypt. So with this aim in mind, Hairy Biker Dave Myers travels the land of the Pharaohs to learn the secret of perfect falafel-making and about Egyptian cuisine in general.

The first thing on every Egyptian’s plate, he’s told, is bread, but his cack-handed attempt to make a loaf reduces the women to helpless laughter. Undeterred he discovers the origins of baking as well as how to make cheese (“Oh it’s not like this with Delia”), a traditional but unpronounceable soup and “Thursday night Viagra” – pigeon.

The Hairy Biker fulfils a boyhood dream by visiting the pyramids at Giza, goes to the oasis of Al Fayoum in search of a dish with mythical properties and heads to a place on the banks of the Nile where ancient man first turned to farming. To mark the end of his journey, Dave is invited by a family of Nubians for a feast to celebrate the end of Eid Al Adha, and helps prepare a traditional meal that has become famous across the entire Arab world.
