The Investigator: A British Crime Story

The Investigator: A British Crime Story

Series 1 - Episode 1

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas, who helped to unmask Jimmy Savile as a serial predatory paedophile, investigates the disappearance of Carole Packman. She vanished from her Bournemouth home after apparently leaving her wedding ring and a brief note in 1985 and has never been seen again.

There’s a heightened dramatic feel to The Investigator - Williams-Thomas looks like Trevor Eve in Waking the Dead as he writes in marker on glass boards in front of his rapt team. This showbiz aspect is surely down to The Investigator’s co-producer, Syco, Simon Cowell’s company.

The story is a sad and baffling one, particularly for Carole’s daughter Sam. Her father, Russell Causley, was jailed in 1996 for his wife’s murder, though a body has never been recovered and Causley won’t talk to his daughter.

Williams-Thomas, at the start of a four-part series, attempts to untangle a story of “twists at every turn… murder… sex… and fraud”.

Journalist and former detective Mark Williams-Thomas turns his attention to the mysterious disappearance of Bournemouth wife and mother Carole Packman. Her husband Russell is in jail for her murder, but a body has never been found, and now her daughter has turned to Williams-Thomas for help. Over four episodes combining documentary and drama, he reinvestigates the case, unravelling the truth about the couple's home life and retracing Carole's steps in the hours leading up to her disappearance.
