Barging Round Britain with John Sergeant

Regent's Canal

Series 2 - Episode 6 Regent's Canal

John Sergeant returns to our waterways after a brief absence from the schedules with a relatively short trip along London’s Regent’s Canal. It was opened in 1820 so that imported foreign goods could be loaded onto narrow boats and transported around the country.

Anyone who thinks living on a boat in the capital is an easy, cheap option should think again: “Just like the rest of London, there’s nowhere to park!” notices John, although there’s no road rage. There are nice views along the way, too, including London Zoo and the picturesque Little Venice, although clearly his favourite stop-off is at an East End gin distillery.

The Regent's Canal runs through the heart of London linking the docks with the rest of Britain. John navigates the history-filled route, finding the East End's haunted Ragged School, and making and sampling a bottle or two of `mother's ruin' along the way. The veteran broadcaster even finds time to stop off to feed the giraffes at London Zoo.
