Review

England v Russia (kick-off 8pm ITV) Roy Hodgson’s men start in Marseille, with a classic banana skin: Russia struggled through a minnow-filled qualification group, only recovering in the final few games thanks to new coach Leonid Slutsky and old-school 6ft 5in goalhanger Artem Dzyuba. But they’re not easy opponents, not quite. Can their mean, if a little ageing, defence shut out Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy? Can anyone’s?

Whether Kane and Vardy both start, and which midfield combination Hodgson employs, are the likely talking points. England do not want to leave themselves having to beat Wales later this week.

Summary

England v Russia (Kick-off 8.00pm). All the action from the opening Group B game of the tournament for both sides, which takes place at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille. Roy Hodgson's England come into this competition on the back of a perfect qualification campaign. The Three Lions won all 10 of their games to progress to the finals with relative ease, and captain Wayne Rooney broke the goalscoring record for his country along the way when he scored a penalty against Switzerland at Wembley to surpass Bobby Charlton's record of 49, which had stood for more than 45 years. By contrast, Russia squeezed through as runners-up in Group G, finishing eight points behind the impressive Austrians. Former England boss Fabio Capello was sacked as manager midway through their campaign after a slow start - replacement Leonid Slutsky won all four of his games in charge to lead the Russians to their fifth European Championship finals since the break-up of the Soviet Union. Presented by Mark Pougatch, with commentary by Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle, and analysis by Lee Dixon, Ian Wright and Peter Crouch.
