Review

This story (first shown three years ago) was a case tailor-made for Nick Knowles, his team of builders and a whole raft of local volunteers. Shropshire fireman Joe Grafton has had a terrible time of it recently. Only weeks after an accident at work put his own job on hold, his wife Jessica, mother of their seven-year-old daughter, Lucy, died unexpectedly from acute leukaemia.

He’d been doing renovations on his home in the village of Hopesay, but these were derailed when a stream was discovered under the foundations. Joe and Lucy were obliged to spend nearly a year living in a caravan on site until local friends contacted the DIY SOS team to save the day. Hankies ready?

Summary

Nick Knowles travels to Hopesay, Shropshire to meet ex-fireman Joe and his seven-year-old daughter Lucy. Joe lost his wife Jess suddenly in 2014, partway through renovating an old cottage into what they had hoped would be a dream family home. Now work has ground to a halt and Joe and his daughter are living in a tiny caravan in the garden. Having heard of their plight, the DIY SOS team arrives to give them the home Jess had wanted for them, backed up by an army of local tradespeople.
