Episode 2: The Southwest Islands

Summary

In the south-west of Japan, the Ryukyu Islands stretch towards the tropics and all life on them is influenced by the power of the sea, with volcanos and typhoons forces to be reckoned with. Michelle Dockery narrates a journey beginning at an island at the top of the chain and travelling south, revealing unexpected stories of isolation, unique wildlife and unsolved mysteries

Review

The snake hunters of Kudaka are intrepid souls. Operating at night in the island’s caves, they wait for the local sea-snakes – flickering creatures with a lethal bite – then nip into the water and pluck them out bare-handed, before stuffing them in a sack.

It’s a sight made all the stranger by the fact that these hunters are Yoko and Setsuko, 70-year-old women who maintain an ancient tradition (they later smoke the creatures and put them in soup) but are the last of their line.

It’s one surprising story among many in another seductive programme that includes monkeys riding deer and the world’s largest moth, which has no mouth because it has no need to feed – it just mates and dies.
