Review

Penelope Keith presents us with a well-stuffed fruitcake of a series on the royal residences, to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.

The first of four slices takes us to Windsor Castle, where Keith pops into the sumptuous St George’s Chapel and later attends a changing of the guard. In the Garter Chapel she makes a beeline for Sir Winston Churchill’s stall, commemorated by a modest brass plaque.

As a former High Sheriff of Surrey, Keith digs into the records office at Kew to find her name under the Queen’s signature (“nice to know one’s in the archive”) before chatting to author Jessica Fellowes (niece of Julian), the latest in a long line of Royal Herb Strewers.

Summary

The actress travels around the country to visit the Queen's official residences and meet people with royal appointments. The journey begins in Windsor Castle, where she finds out about Britain's oldest order of chivalry, meets the Royal Herb Strewer and unearths a box of treasure dating back to Elizabeth I. She also takes a trip up the Thames in the gilded barge Gloriana.
