Review

There’s a rule of thumb with hard-hitting drama series. If an episode appears to be a little quiet or light-hearted, beware. It’ll get ugly.

And so it proves tonight as writer Steven Knight concocts another brain-damaging cocktail from the unlikely ingredients of a Birmingham bookie, a Russian princess and a rotten priest.

It’s Good Friday. While the Shelby menfolk go hunting, the women decide they’ll walk out on strike with the rest of Birmingham’s working women. But Aunt Polly is horribly drunk and has already been indiscreet in the worst place possible.

The episode nods to social developments of the 1920s. Not just trades unions, but telephones and great sniffs of cocaine play their part – Esme is convinced it’s helping her through her pregnancy.

Meanwhile, another strong woman, that gorgeous Russian aristocrat Tatiana, comes into focus as Tommy gets to know her better. She’s a wild one.

Summary

The gripping drama is halfway through and the twists and turns come thick and fast as Tommy shares some important family news with his brothers, and outlines his plans for the most audacious criminal act the gang has ever undertaken. He also finds himself playing a dangerous game with Tatiana as they attempt to acquire information from each another. Meanwhile, a guilty Polly makes an ill-advised confession - with terrible consequences for her nephew. Cillian Murphy stars, with Helen McCrory, Paddy Considine and Gaite Jansen.
