The Supervet

Series 6 - Episode 10

“Trauma surgery is one of my absolute favourite things to do,” says The Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick as he repairs a young dog’s badly shattered hip, “because you take a broken animal in a lot of pain and within hours you have an animal without pain that is hopefully… going to walk again normally.” Clearly he gets a kick out of doing pioneering surgery – and presumably as a young boy he loved making things from Meccano.

But his passion for tricky operations doesn’t stop him being sensitive towards the animals and owners. “It’s never easy,” he says glumly after yet another difficult phone conversation in which he warns that a beloved pet might have cancer.

Pioneering veterinarian Noel Fitzpatrick plans to use groundbreaking cell technology to repair damaged cartilage in a 10-month-old golden retriever that helps a five-year-old girl cope with epilepsy. A cat arrives at the surgery with a suspected rat bite that seems to be getting bigger, and a whippet is brought in after being hit by a car - sustaining multiple pelvic fractures.
