Episode 1: Henry VIII - Rise of a Dynasty

Summary

Tracy Borman takes a closer look at the rituals and routines of life in the Tudor courts, beginning with attitudes to sex at the beginning of Henry VIII's reign

Review

There seems to be no end to our fascination with all things Tudor. But is there anything left to discover about these well-recorded royals? Tracy Borman, of Historic Royal Palaces (think Lucy Worsley without the penchant for dressing up), has all sorts of interesting details to pique our interest.

Did you know, for example, that in this period women’s sexual pleasure was actually deemed important, as it was believed that a fulfilled wife was a fecund wife, and having heirs was vital. Mind you, that didn’t stop husbands being unfaithful (they had to get comfort somewhere if their wives were perpetually pregnant). And there was almost no job more important than being the person who wiped the king’s bottom…
