Review

For a team making only its third appearance at the Euros, just getting to France is an achievement. For a team that includes Zlatan “I can’t help but laugh at how perfect I am” Ibrahimovic, anything less than a win is not an option. If the Republic of Ireland get anything against Sweden it’ll be a triumph.

Summary

Republic of Ireland v Sweden (Kick-off 5.00pm). Group E gets under way with this clash at the Stade de France in Paris. With stern tests to come against Italy and Belgium, both sides will have targeted this fixture as an excellent opportunity to get three points on the board and greatly enhance their chances of reaching the last 16. The nations last met in the qualifying campaign for the 2014 World Cup, when they drew 0-0 in Stockholm, before Sweden claimed a 2-1 victory in Dublin. Unusually, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was not among the goals on that occasion, but he was in fine form in the recent qualifying campaign. The charismatic striker scored eight goals in Group G, before netting another three in the two-legged play-off against Denmark to secure his team's place in France. Ireland also had to come through a play-off to qualify, overcoming Bosnia & Herzegovina after finding a hero of their own in Jonathan Walters, who struck twice in a 2-0 win at the Aviva Stadium following a 1-1 draw in Zenica.
