Review

"I promise I will make us safe," Tommy told his beautiful bride. Well, he's got his work cut out. As he returns to the smoke and sparks of a Birmingham factory the plot flames fully into life, with an episode that shocks us, tricks us and delivers scenes of such viciousness it’s hard to watch. Back to business as usual, then.

New to the story is Paddy Considine as Fr John Hughes, a menacing minister who acts for a group of establishment types: “Businessmen, MPs, army officers,” he explains, “Trying to save the country from revolution.”

They are middlemen for the deal the Blinders are doing to send arms to the White Russians. So suddenly Tommy is dining with a Romanov duke at the Ritz and making powerful enemies. Deep waters, but we’ve never known the great Tommy Shelby be out of his depth. Until now.

Summary

On the orders of the secretive Economic League, Tommy goes to London to meet the wildly eccentric and volatile Duke Leon - and when he is given his mission, he soon realises the extreme lengths his new paymasters are willing to go to in their quest for power. Back in Birmingham, John's temper gets the better of him, and a personal dispute with the Italians threatens to explode into a devastating war. Tommy struggles to regain control of the situation - only to discover how extensive his new enemy's hold on the Peaky Blinders is. Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory and Joe Cole star, with an appearance by Paddy Considine.
