Review

The dresses and dinner jackets on show as television’s great and good gather for their annual prize-giving can be deceptive. It may all look to the casual observer as if this is a night that’s all about celebrating success – the brightest telly triumphs of the year and the biggest stars. But take that with a tiny pinch of salt, because if there’s one thing a Bafta jury loves, it’s an underdog.

Hence Georgina Campbell beat three A-listers to win last year’s leading actress award, for Murdered by My Boyfriend. And this year you’ll look in vain for Poldark in the best drama series category, while scratching your head to remember The Last Panthers – which is on the list.

So expect the unexpected as Graham Norton and his starry guest presenters announce the winners. Wolf Hall, Peter Kay’s Car Share and The Great British Bake Off really should come away with prizes; the fun will be seeing if they do.

Graham Norton hosts the prestigious TV awards show from London's Royal Festival Hall.
