Subtlety is an alien concept in tonight’s boisterous pantomime, the kind of spectacle that prefigured Hi-de-Hi! The Home Guard is in charity mode, offering to supply the finale to Walmington-on-Sea’s Wings for Victory week. Captain (George) Mainwaring suggests a St George and the Dragon theme, and naturally takes the lead. Pride, however, comes before several falls – from a horse.
For Dad’s Army this kind of dressing-up-as-comedy is fairly untypical, as is the unseemly behaviour of older members of the platoon. And it’s all rather laboured – Jones’s cross-eyed gurning a case in point. Still, there is a certain surreal majesty to the sight of one dragon crashing into another, and Mainwaring gets to fight Hodges, legitimately, at last.
