Review

Subtlety is an alien concept in tonight’s boisterous pantomime, the kind of spectacle that prefigured Hi-de-Hi! The Home Guard is in charity mode, offering to supply the finale to Walmington-on-Sea’s Wings for Victory week. Captain (George) Mainwaring suggests a St George and the Dragon theme, and naturally takes the lead. Pride, however, comes before several falls – from a horse.

For Dad’s Army this kind of dressing-up-as-comedy is fairly untypical, as is the unseemly behaviour of older members of the platoon. And it’s all rather laboured – Jones’s cross-eyed gurning a case in point. Still, there is a certain surreal majesty to the sight of one dragon crashing into another, and Mainwaring gets to fight Hodges, legitimately, at last.

Summary

Captain Mainwaring and his platoon plan to stage a re-enactment of the St George and the dragon story as part of the Wings for Victory fundraising campaign, but discover Hodges and his fellow ARP wardens have had the same idea. Vintage comedy first shown in 1977, starring Arthur Lowe.
