The Showing Up of Corporal Jones

Series 1 - Episode 5 The Showing Up of Corporal Jones

This early example of Perry and Croft’s imperishable warcom sees the actors still trying on their characters for size: Captain Mainwaring is less pompous, Wilson is more hardy, and so on. But it also marks a turning point for the platoon – their uniforms arrive! – and neatly captures the show’s provincial charm. As Mainwaring says, “We are responsible for England... from the Stone’s Amusement Arcade to the Jolly Roger Pier.”

The captain coaches his creaky troops for a spot inspection by GHQ, but a senior officer finds Corporal Jones to be a liability and orders him to complete an assault course. Don’t panic!

A major from Area HQ decides Corporal Jones is too old to be in the Home Guard, asking him to prove his worth by completing an assault course - leaving the rest of the platoon hatching a plan to help him. Comedy first broadcast in 1968, starring Clive Dunn, Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier.
