Number Engaged

Series 9 - Episode 5 Number Engaged

Co-writer David Croft once said of Arnold Ridley, who played the elderly, rheumatic Godfrey, “Arnold was a delightful old dear in his 70s and I explained to him that I couldn’t save him from having to run about a bit.” So I adore one Godfrey line in tonight’s repeat: “There’s a phone box about a mile down the road; would you like me to sprint down and telephone?”

The brave if impractical suggestion comes when a bomb lands on a stretch of telephone wires being guarded by the platoon. Despite some typically ponderous problem-solving, there are unusual beats and a scene involving a collapsing bunk-bed that shouldn’t be funny but is.

Mainwaring and the platoon are put in charge of guarding a stretch of telephone line that is vital to the war effort. During the night, there is an air raid and the men wake the next morning to find an unexploded bomb has caught in the wires. Comedy first shown in 1977, starring Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier and Clive Dunn.
