The Day the Balloon Went Up

Series 3 - Episode 8 The Day the Balloon Went Up

Review

Mainwaring has always had ideas above his station, but he really does go up in the world in this all-action episode. The platoon do their best to anchor a rogue barrage balloon, but can’t prevent the captain going on his impromptu flight (the crew had to wait for high winds to subside before filming could begin).

It’s solid knockabout fare, preceded by a slovenly parade (Walker bulging with black-market goods; gouty Godfrey leaning on a stick) and an unusual whodunnit in the Tower Room (we never discover the culprit). There’s something for everyone: my vote goes to Hodges forcibly removing Mr Blewitt from his tricycle.

Summary

The platoon rescues the verger from being carried away by a barrage balloon and the men take it off to the woods to secure it to a tree. Unfortunately they let go of the ropes too early and it floats off - taking Captain Mainwaring with it. Classic comedy first broadcast in 1969, starring Arthur Lowe, John Laurie, John Le Mesurier and Clive Dunn.
