Review

This Glasgow-set sitcom first surfaced as a one-off New Year’s Eve special in 2013 based around a Hogmanay party. It plays on the tiffs and tensions when neighbours socialise, particularly when said neighbours include grotesques like Christine, a hypochondriac with no social filter (“The bladder’s away again!”) or snooty extrovert Cathy.

The latter is played by Doon Mackichan, who does a nice line in veiled put-downs. When her hostess Beth’s freezer contents are nearly ruined by Beth’s drunken husband (Alex Norton from Taggart) leaving the door open all night, Cathy is all sympathy: “How are you holding up?” she oozes. “See, if that was me I’d be devastated. Obviously, your stuff’s not as dear, but even still.”

There are distant hints of Abigail’s Party but this is gentler; not fall-about-laughing funny yet – but give it time.

Summary

When Eric raids the freezer, he leaves the door open and all the food inside thaws out, so his better half Beth throws an impromptu party for friends Cathy, Colin, Ian, Jaz, Christine and Sophie to consume the food before it goes to waste. Everything goes well until Cathy urges Colin to go next door and get something out of their freezer to replace the defrosted food - a whole Scottish salmon. First episode of the Scottish sitcom exploring the best and worst of suburban family life, starring Arabella Weir, Alex Norton, Doon Mackichan, Jonathan Watson, Elaine C Smith and Sharon Rooney.
