The Supervet

Series 6 - Episode 1

Noel Fitzpatrick is a brilliant orthopaedic-neuro veterinary surgeon but he knows he has no patience and is difficult. “Would I like to work for me? Hell no!” he says. However, in the operating theatre he has no equal.

Three-legged cat Jersey needs a hip replacement but this procedure has never been done on a cat – until now. He also has two heavyweight challenges: Mr Mac, a Great Dane with nerve damage and Dogue de Bordeaux Reggie, who has severe dysplasia in both elbows. Handling a big dog is tricky: “It’s like wrestling with a bear,” says one of the auxiliary staff. But persuading a cat to undergo hydrotherapy isn’t easy, either.

A couple who have spent their lives saving stray animals bring in a three-legged cat called Jersey, who has recently become lame in her single back leg. The vet must decide whether the first-ever hip replacement on a three-legged cat is viable. Plus, a Great Dane is given a custom-designed spinal implant, and a Dogue de Bordeaux gets help with elbow dysplasia.
