Review

It's tempting to think of Grantchester as a sort of 1950s Midsomer Murders, but there's more to it than country killings and sunlit scenery. When it's at its best - as in this episode - there's a real, swooning sadness to it, particularly in the doomed love between Sidney (James Norton) and his sometime soul mate Amanda (Morven Christie), who is now married to that posh oaf Guy and seemingly out of reach. Somehow, she and Sidney missed their boat and now they pine for each other from opposite shores, though at least Sidney has sparky Margaret to cheer him up.

Meanwhile, our hero's friendship with Geordie comes under strain when they each give evidence in opposite sides of the murder trial that has been looming over them. A conviction will mean the death penalty, and to drive the point home, there is a hanging in the murder case of the week, where a racehorse owner (Paul Nicholls) is convinced his dead wife has come back to haunt him. Sidney's sort-of-exorcism doesn't go to plan.

Summary

As the trial of local teenager Gary Bell approaches, Sidney and Geordie find themselves in disagreement regarding his guilt. Meanwhile, a man is convinced that his dead wife is haunting his home and stable yards, and implores Sidney to come to his estate and perform an exorcism for him. The vicar offers prayers and counsel, but when the man is found hanged in the exact same spot in which his wife died, Sidney and Geordie are united by a shared goal as they investigate his suicide. Drama set in the 1950s, starring James Norton and Robson Green.
