Steve Backshall's Extreme Mountain Challenge

Steve Backshall's Extreme Mountain Challenge

Series 1 - Episode 1

Steve Backshall goes on a jungle expedition. Nothing special about that. He’s done them before, many of them. But not like this one. You get the sense he’ll remember this one, because for some reason he and a team of climbers have set off to climb the incredible “tepuis” of Venezuela just as the rainy season is coming on.

A tepui is a sheer-sided slab of rock that juts straight up out of the jungle and has more jungle on top, and when the sides are wet, the rock is so slippery that, as Backshall tells us, “It might as well be covered in oil.” Their plan is to climb one and explore the top, but the rainy season has other ideas, as do rock falls, lightning, high winds, scorpions and so on.

All this means Backshall doesn’t need to build up the jeopardy too much in his pieces to camera. But he also does some terrific bits with the local wildlife, including a spider with a bite no gentleman would care to risk…

Part one of two. The naturalist leads a team of rock climbers across Venezuela's tepuis - sheer-sided mountains surrounded by jungle. In the first episode, he attempts an ascent of a rockface that has never been climbed previously to discover what kind of animals live at the summit. However, to get there he will have to brave wildlife, rapids and a run-in with a rickety biplane.
