Review

If anyone can get away with riding roughshod over the proudest culinary achievements of a nation, it’s Jamie Oliver. Some would consider his ingredient-fiddling to be nothing short of heresy, but at least it’s in a good cause. In a face-off between a cheap ready meal and his bargain paella made without the traditional (but expensive) saffron, his recipe would be the victor – and he knows it.

Now his trademark barrage of positivity is directed towards the enlivening effect of combining store-cupboard ingredients and Sunday leftovers. A “mega Scooby snack” of Vietnamese banh mi is joined by Mexican tacos as a way of transforming cold roast pork, and posh almost-beans on toast come straight from the freezer. Even Nonna would agree that it all looks great – and never mind the sweet chilli sauce in the meatballs alla Norma.

Summary

Jamie Oliver rustles up a frugal paella with chicken thighs, spicy chorizo and prawns, and uses leftovers from a Sunday roast pork to make midweek crispy Mexican tacos and French Vietnamese banh mi. Plus, Sicilian-inspired meatballs and tomato `Norma' sauce and a twist on beans on toast with broad beans and peas from the freezer. The chef also demonstrates how to reap the benefits of a well-stocked store cupboard.
