Review

This episode opens surprisingly, with wisecracking Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) fired from the NYPD and drinking his troubles away. We then jump back in time a week to see how he got to this point, in a story that manages to sum up just about everything that’s made this show a sleeper hit.

There are great one-liners, hilarious yet convincing character beats, physical comedy and even some pathos as Jake has to throw his trust behind Captain Holt, brilliantly played by Andre Braugher as a stickler for rules with a dark humour and heart of gold.

It’s also a great week for Braugher generally, with jokes riffing on his seriousness and sex appeal not detracting from the convincing relationship between him and Peralta that has been the bedrock of this series.

It’s not the most inventive sitcom out there, but the characters are perfectly drawn and, above all else, it’s pretty damn funny.

Summary

Peralta suspects a civic leader of money laundering, but his investigation is shut down by the police commissioner. Determined to crack the case, he enlists Santiago and Holt to help uncover more evidence - and risks suspension as a result. Boyle is devastated when Vivian ends their relationship, so his colleagues try to cheer him up.
