Review

You’d have thought that whodunnits had railways pretty much covered, what with Murder on the Orient Express and The Lady Vanishes being so memorable. But Murdoch Mysteries manages to find a couple of extra miles of track for this atmospheric train-set case in which the good detective escorts his archenemy James Gillies to his execution in Kingston.

Like every screen serial killer worth their salt, Gillies specialises in softly spoken, cryptic insinuation (Hannibal Lecter has a lot to answer for – aside from the cannibalism, of course). But is the man already responsible for six murders to blame when a dead body is discovered on board?

Summary

Murdoch, Brackenreid and Ogden escort serial killer James Gillies on a train to a prison in Kingston, Ontario, where he will be executed the next day. When a murder occurs, it transpires some of the passengers are in league with Gillies, and have planned an audacious escape attempt. Drama, starring Yannick Bisson as a principled detective investigating crime in 19th-century Canada.
