Review

A key to this series’ success is the way it recaptures our wonder at the natural world. It does this by charting the development of our knowledge (just imagine how the public reacted to proof of a butterfly’s metamorphosis) and furnishing us with the latest findings (CT scans show how migratory instincts are passed on).

This double bill – sadly the last – keeps the marvels coming not only with the magical appearances of painted ladies and swallows, but also the rule-breaking gender swaps of seahorses and hyenas. But the biggest surprise would be if schools didn’t use the series to bolster science lessons.

Summary

David Attenborough reveals why male seahorses give birth, and looks at how hyena packs are dominated by the female members.
