Two Swords

Series 4 - Episode 1 Two Swords

Review

“When you play the Game of Thrones,” Cersei Lannister once warned, “you win or you die.” The first episode of series four shows what happens after you win. The Lannisters have defeated their great rival family: the only Starks left are tiny wee children with very sharp swords; Cersei and Jaime are reunited (although all is not well with the twin-cestuous couple); and Tyrion is back having petty humiliations heaped on his head.

Except the war is far from over. Like previous series premieres, the story hops from character to character, laying out the board for the next round. New enemies appear while old ones gather power. It’s thrilling if slightly disjointed stuff.

This is also the funniest the breasts-and-betrayal epic has been in some time. The cast are so comfortable they can afford to be a little campy and scenes clip by with an easy confidence. Game of Thrones is an exceptional show in its prime, and it knows it. Thankfully for us, the game never ends.

Summary

Tyrion is sent out to welcome a royal party from Dorne outside the walls of King's Landing, and Jon Snow finds himself on trial at Castle Black over his time with the wildlings and the death of Qhorin Halfhand. Daenerys heads toward the slave city of Meereen, and Arya runs into a familiar face. Fantasy drama, starring Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington.
