Review

The reference to home comforts does not mean we’re about to see chef James Martin’s personal squishy sofa, two-person whirlpool bath or disco-themed cocktail bar (and he probably doesn’t have any of these things in his home) although this is, apparently, filmed in his own kitchen.

Instead this new series is all about the sort of comfort food he enjoys rustling up on his days off. In this episode, that’s a chicken and mushroom pie as well as slow-cooked spare ribs; sounds like that New Year’s diet resolution just went out of the window.

Summary

A glimpse of the chef in his own kitchen, preparing the dishes he enjoys rustling up while `off duty'. He begins by focusing on meals suitable for lazy winter days, serving a chicken and mushroom puff pastry pie and slow-cooked spare ribs. One of Wiltshire's brewers, Alasdair Large, visits the kitchen to see what James can create with his own locally produced beer, and food historian Ivan Day reveals how the slow cooking of yesteryear saw the use of an indulgent spit roast.
