Review

According to Dr Clare Jackson, the Stuarts were Britain’s defining royal family. “More than any other, the Stuart century [in which they grappled with three separate kingdoms, multiple religions and civil war] was the one in which the foundations of modern Britain were laid,” she argues.

The starting point for this three-part series shown earlier this year in Scotland is the rise of the Stuart dynasty and an examination of how James VI attempted to unite the three kingdoms under the umbrella of his crowns. Or, as he so charmingly described it, “I am the husband and all the whole isle is my lawful wife.”

Summary

Clare Jackson examines the history of the Stuarts, who grappled with the chaos of three separate kingdoms, multiple religions and civil war during the 17th century. In the opening episode, she looks at James VI of Scotland's attempts to unite his country with England and Ireland and persuade his subjects to feel more British.
