Review

George Gently’s polished, arrogant superior officer wants rid of the turbulent cop. “There comes a time when it’s unseemly for senior officers still to be rocking the boat, ignoring orders,” he tells the old curmudgeon, in a perfect, neat encapsulation of the predicament of the maverick TV detective. Gently (Martin Shaw) is offered a promotion to the traffic department or, perhaps, he’d like to retire?

But Gently isn’t ready to be put out to pasture just yet, not when there’s a dead body in a coal mine, a union official found with a serious head wound. He’s been murdered. Along with his chippy sidekick Bacchus (Lee Ingleby), Gently picks apart the factions and fallings-out that characterise a 1969 pit community whose survival is at the mercy of the hated National Coal Board. It’s another bulky, serviceable tale, the last in the series.

Summary

Bacchus and Gently are called in to investigate the death of a miner, which is being treated as suspicious because even though his body was discovered down the pit, records show he was above ground when he disappeared. Alleged victim Arthur Hawkes was a proud union man, and his children confirm he fought long and hard to keep the closure-threatened mine open. But as the detectives dig deeper, they find that not everyone agrees with this portrait of him. Could he really have sold his union comrades down the river? Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby star, with Simon Greenall, Jack Deam and Michael Socha.
