Review

Simon Reeve has repeatedly said that he has no religious faith. So he’s surprised to feel emotional when, having shuffled along in a queue with hundreds of others, he sees the birthplace of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. In fact as he travels from Istanbul – which, as Constantinople, was once one of the holiest cities in the world – to the Holy Land, he admits he now understands the connection that pilgrims feel when visiting sacred sites.

He even offers the odd profound observation, such as that peace is the rock on which our future is built. “Even for a non-believer, pilgrimage offers a sense of purpose and achievement,” he concludes before exhorting us all to find our “own Jerusalem”.

Summary

Simon follows in the footsteps of travellers who made long, arduous and dangerous journeys to reach Jerusalem, where every year millions of Christians, Jews and Muslims still go to worship. In the Old City, he joins in the ancient ritual of walking along the Via Dolorosa, the route taken by Jesus as He carried the cross to the site of His crucifixion.
