Review

And then there were three… as friends, relatives and former Bake Off contestants gather on the lawn of that lovely Somerset country house for the final, the remaining trio have to find those last flourishes of magnificence. The one who soars is the one who will win.

The Tent of Dreams looks very empty as the contestants, all women, square up to their last signature challenge, a savoury picnic pie. Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry patrol the aisles one last time (“Is it going to ooze?” Hollywood wonders of one sticky creation) as the bakers smile, simper and have one last group hug.

We see charming little films of their proud families, and cute childhood pictures, but the competition is fierce. Things, of course, go wrong – one hopeful sits alone in a field of buttercups, ruing a disaster, and there are tears. Oh dear me, yes, there are lots of tears.

Summary

The three finalists are challenged to make a savoury picnic pie with a creative design and sides strong enough to be served out of the tin, before moving on to make 12 perfectly shaped pretzels topped with orange zest and glaze, and finally, a three-tiered wedding cake. All their efforts take place at a summer garden party attended by their family and friends, and judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood decide who most deserves the 2013 title. Presented by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc.
