Review

At one stage in tonight’s second series opener of the US spin on The Thick of It, one of the vice-president’s advisers warns her about a brutal new strategist: “You can’t reason with him, it would be like explaining Supertramp to a komodo dragon.”

It’s the kind of line the dialogue throws up at the rate of about two a second. If the jokes had room to breathe there wouldn’t be the unique hit that Veep offers, of cynicism, sniping and political pratfalls delivered at the pace of a 1930s screwball comedy. Once you get on the wavelength it’s hilariously enjoyable and makes other comedies feel decaffeinated by comparison. Plus as the vice-president with a repertoire of insincere smiles, Julia-Louis Dreyfus gets better and better.

Summary

The return of Armando Iannucci's satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as US vice-president Selina Meyer. The party suffers heavy defeats to the opposition in midterm elections, but Selina's improved approval ratings means the president is more willing to use her as the public voice of his faltering administration. She also has to cope with cold and calculating new senior strategist Kent Davison (Gary Cole).
