Review

We’re being given the chance to revisit the key points of battle between Audrey fforbes-Hamilton (Penelope Keith) and Richard DeVere (Peter Bowles), thanks to a repeat run of the fondly remembered class comedy, first shown back in 1979. It was a massive hit for BBC1, with ratings, at one point, reaching the vertiginous heights of 24 million.

And this is where it all began, with the nouveau riche DeVere succeeding the widowed and debt-ridden Audrey as the owner of her ancestral home, Grantleigh Manor. He’s all checked blazers, flares and international profits, she’s ramrod-straight county and full of stuffy complaints about the Common Market. But opposites would, eventually, attract.

Summary

First episode of the comedy. The death of her husband leaves upper-class snob Audrey fforbes-Hamilton a widow in drastically reduced circumstances, with her beloved ancestral pile up for auction. Starring Penelope Keith and Peter Bowles.
